The Dreaded Place Value

As many educators will attest to at the elementary level teaching place value has to be one of the toughest, yet one of the most foundational  aspects of teaching math.  For one reason or another it just seems to be in my opinion almost too “abstract” at times for students to fully grasp how numbers are assigned value, based on where they are placed when they are being taught it. The mystery of the difficulties of teaching place values are as epic as the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. We know it’s there, but we always seem to get lost once we are inside of it. However, with that all being said, I was searching for a song and I came across this one. Believe it or not this has just over 1 000 000 views in five years. I always aim for something memorable when selecting a video for the students to watch. This video is so memorable students have actually requested that I play over and over. This video definitely is in a league of it’s own when it comes to weirdness, but that’s what I like about and it and the students too.
